Examinations &

Hygiene

There is nothing better and stronger than your own natural teeth so it’s important to us that we are able to help you look after them as long as possible. Routine dental check ups and visits to the hygienist are the best way to maintain your natural teeth and oral hygiene.

Most patients tend to only call a dentist when there is a problem or if they want to change their smile. However, it’s extremely important that you visit us on a regular basis to ensure that we are able to assess and provide you with the appropriate advice to maintain your smile. Remember, if you want cosmetic treatments then you must have good oral hygiene first!

Your examination will include x-rays where appropriate to understand the health of your teeth and gums. These check-ups don’t tend to take long and as long as you visit us and our hygienists on a regular basis it will give us the best chance at preventing problems in the future. If a problem does occur then the regular visits will allow us to pick them up before it results a potential extraction!

It If has been a while since you saw a dentist or if you are nervous to see us, don’t worry - we will take the very best care of you and help you before any problems occur.

Dental hygiene is a huge part of maintaining a healthy smile and preventing dental diseases.

Over time, your teeth will accumulate deposits of plaque (a soft, sticky layer of bacteria, food & saliva) and hard tartar (calculus). As part of your hygiene visit, we will remove these deposits and give you expert advise on how to minimise the build up in between your visits.

What to expect at your

Hygiene visit:

  • Assessment of your gum health: Our hygienist will screen for signs of gum disease, areas that require increased brushing attention and other gum factors such as bleeding, smoking, alcohol and oral cancer. They will also take this opportunity to get to know you as a person, your habits and what you got up to last weekend!
  • Detailed Cleaning: The hygienist will perform a thorough clean to remove soft and hard deposits that can develop on your teeth over time. It is essential these are removed to ensure that things like gum disease cant develop over time. This can be done with or without water, depending on what is required!
  • Bespoke advice: Your hygienist will discuss with you how to minimise these deposits in future to ensure healthier gums. You will receive oral hygiene advice tailored to your needs so that we can work together to keep your gums and teeth as healthy as possible.

By regularly visiting a hygienist, you can ensure the foundations of your teeth (the gums) are kept as healthy as possible enabling your teeth to function well for as long as you need them to!
